Top Nail Trends for Autumn / Winter 2011

Top Nail Trends for Autumn/Winter

Followers of fashion may often find themselves frustrated at the cost of their passion – even with programmes like Gok’s Fashion Fix showing us you can achieve a designer look at a fraction of  designer  prices, high street clothes still aren’t as cheap as we’d probably like. So, this is where nail trends really shine. The recent London Fashion Week not only showcased new clothing and accessory styles but also gave us an insight into what’s hot in the world of nails. Unlike new outfits, which might become unfashionable in a few months, stunning on-trend nails are achievable, affordable and easily updated. So, let’s take a look at what is big news for Autumn/Winter nails and get our creative caps on!

Colours

Autumn/Winter colours are predictably not as bright as the Summer ones, but this doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with them. Nude tones are hot stuff right now, and will carry through into Spring. Whilst they may not sound exciting, see below for some inspiration with them; they can be as playful as brights. Other big shades for this Season are taupe, which is good news as it suits all nail shapes and lengths, and earthy tones of green and blue.

Magnetic Nail Polish

This is a fresh idea and one I personally adore (and so should you!) These polishes are applied like a normal polish, and then a magnet on the bottle lid is moved along the nail whilst the paint is still wet to create amazing swirly effects. Using this basic technique, your nails will look like they have waves on them, however nail art is all about creativity so why not see what other patterns and effects you can create? If you like to be unique, you must give this polish a go! I tried Nails Inc’s version (£13 each), in Houses of Parliament – a gorgeous, indulgent metallic purple colour – but other companies are bringing out similar products, including Boots brand, 17 (£5.99 each). I’d say the colour range for magnetics is a little limited at the moment, but I’m sure it will broaden as the trend catches on.

Ombré

In a nutshell, ombré is about different shades of the same colour, so either whack a different shade of your chosen colour on each of your nails, or paint each individual nail with 2 (or more!) shades. If you’re quite an  indecisive person (like me) you’ll probably love this type of nail trend: why choose one polish when you can choose 5… or even 10! For extra fashionista points, you could combine ombré with the moon shape trend I mention below!

Half Moon Shape

The catwalks were full of half moon painted nails – no, not an actual picture of a moon! This trend involves embracing your cuticle areas and painting over the top of your crescent shape with a different colour or shade (think ombré!) to the main part of the nail. Think of it as an inverse French manicure. Dita von Teese has been spotted rocking this look, so you know it must be good! Think outside the box with this trend – some models and celebs have been spotted with pointy triangles instead of moon curves, and crazy colour combinations.

So, that’s the main nail trends for this season – are you feeling inspired? Have fun experimenting – I know I will!
