The pros and cons of detox diets

Have you thought about going on a detox diet before? There are literally dozens of different detox diets advertised, many of which make some pretty astounding claims. They claim that you’ll loose weight, rid your body of toxins, have more energy, less fatigue, and many other things. Like all diets, though, you have to be skeptical before investing your time, and your body, into them. Here we’ll take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of detox diets.

First, lets take a look at what a detox is – also known as a “cleansing diet”, a detox diet involves ridding your body of all the unnatural ingredients and chemicals we ingest in our everyday foods. We live in an age where we eat significant amounts of processed foods, sodium, saturated fats, sugars, tons of fillers, chemicals, growth hormones and pesticides. A detox diet involves fasting from our usual solid foods which contain all these unnatural ingredients and replacing it with various beneficial liquids.

There are many different types of detoxes out there, one of which is the notorious lemon detox. Popularized when pop-star Beyonce went public about her lemon detox experience, this diet involves drinking water, lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup for at least one week with no foods. According to the pop-star, she was able to lose a whopping 20 pounds in just 2 weeks thanks to the lemon detox diet.

If you’re interested in giving the lemon detox a try, then you’ll need to go and purchase some fresh lemons, bottled water, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. To start, pour 8 ounces of the bottled water into a large glass. Next, squeeze out two tablespoons of lemon juice and two tablespoons of syrup into your glass. Add a few dashes of cayenne pepper and then drink it down! It’s best to drink at least 6 of these drinks everyday for a minimum of one week. If you want to go all out like Beyonce, then you should strive for 2 weeks.

Excluding solid foods from your diet will certainly be difficult for most people, especially when you’re around others who are eating. In order to be successful with this detox diet, you must have the self control to prevent yourself from eating solid foods. If you have family members or friends around, you may want to let them know you’re detoxing and to try and avoid eating around you.

As you can see, the greatest disadvantage associated with detox diets is the simple lack of solid foods. If you’ve never experienced fasting before, there’s words that can accurately describe how hungry you get after a few days of not eating. You will literally eat anything in front of you. The upside of the detox diet is that it does in fact help you lose weight and cleanse your body of unwanted toxins. Some people enjoy the effects of detoxing so much that they practice it several times a year. While this frequently detoxing may not be necessary, it certainly can’t hurt.
