10 Tips For Boosting Your Mood!

10 tips for boosting your mood

The human mind and body are incredible things, and the way the mind functions is amazing. The way we feel and our moods can change as often as the weather and can go from one extreme to the other. Fortunately we don’t have to sit and suffer as there are a few simple and natural ways to keep your mood on top form, because let’s face it, no one likes a grump.

1. Eat often, but light.

Eating at regular intervals throughout your day will prevent dips in your body’s blood sugar levels which can sometimes contribute to a bad mood. Try to plan your meals and snacks in advance to avoid getting overly hungry. It is advisable have three to six ‘eating episodes’ (this includes snacks and meals) in a day depending on the individual appetite.

2. Eat the right foods.

Overeating refined carbohydrates such as fizzy drinks, chocolate, sweets, cookies and white flour which are concentrated sources of sugar can leave you feeling tired and heavy. This is because these foods provide a fast supply of sugar and energy but will make you crash quickly, so eat them at a moderate amount.

3. Eat foods with a little lean protein.

Try to involve a small amount of lean protein to your meals and snacks as it will make you feel alert and productive for hours.

4. Get regular exercise.

I understand that exercise may not be the first thing on your list when you’re feeling down but trust me, it releases natural hormones that will boost your mood and energy levels. A brisk walk with the dog, playing with the kids or taking part in zumba fitness (either at home or at your local zumba session) are all ideal ways to get exercise if hitting the gym isn’t your cup of tea. Not only is it good for your mood but it will also make your body feel better and if done often enough may keep some unwanted extra weight off too, two birds with one stone!

5. Get outside!

These days we absolutely love our gadgets and gizmo’s, especially the computer and social networks. However, keeping cooped up inside staring at a screen may be good for a while but can quickly drain your mood (especially if you come across your ex’s facebook page!). Take a break from technology and take to the great outdoors. Whether it’s just for a walk with the kids or a camping trip with the fella, fresh air will ignite your senses and give a boost of energy. And ladies, the cold weather is no excuse to stay inside, get those woolies out and get out there, the cold air will make you feel fresh.

6. Keep to a regular sleep schedual.

Personally i’m rubbish at sticking to this rule, I often stay up late and then sleep through the morning which is horrible for my healthy not to mention ruins my body clock. Studies show that adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep a day, any less and we’ll be falling asleep at the office, any more and you may get that unfortunate feeling of waking up more tired than you were when you went to sleep. Try your absolute best to sleep through the night. Then when you wake in the morning you should feel refreshed and ready for the day. And if you’re not a morning person, a shower in the morning with your favourite shower gel should do the trick. And to go one step further, a blast of cold water before you get out of the shower will not only wake you up mentally but will wake your skin up. And lucky it does wonders for the shine in your hair too, so that’s a plus!

7. Pet to the rescue!

Believe it or not, doing something as small as just petting your cat or dog can boost your mood tremendously. It has been shown to lower blood pressure, create a sense of calmness, happiness and well-being. If you don’t own a pet then don’t worry, visit a pet store, volunteer at a animal rescue centre or visit a friend who has a pet to get your furry fix.

8, Fake it and you’ll make it.

Grinning through your bad moods will, in time, reflect your mood too. So if you just soldier through and keep smiling, then eventually you will feel happier and calmer about everything.

9. Do something that gives you joy.

It doesn’t have to be anything money grabbing, a movie or reading a book will do fine. Just doing something that you enjoy will boost your mood. Trying something new will also give your mood a boost. So for example if you enjoy dancing, then try a new genre of dance like latin or ballroom. And going with your partner will make things more enjoyable still!

10. Write a list of things that improve your mood.

By trial and error, finding things that make you feel better when you have certain moods will make life a lot easier. For example, if you’re feeling angry then write a diary about your feelings. If you’re feeling stressed then a yoga class or watching your favourite tv show could make you feel better. And if you’re feeling exhausted then turn all the lights off, get snuggly in bed and just slump into a nap. Finding the write things that bring you out of bad moods and then writing them down will keep the bad moods at bay and make you a much more pleasant person to be around.
