It’s back again! YAY! From the amount of interest our last Beautilicious Awards got we just had to create another one this year. There was a lot more entries this year what were, 923 to be exact! So how did these awards come about? Here at DropOfPink, we wanted to see what the community valued and what they thought was under-rated and what needs to be recognised among other bloggers as a great source for beauty / fashion / makeup information. The list below is ordered A to Z and has a wide array of blogs ranging from fashion, beauty, makeup and product reviews of women related products. You might see some blogs what won last year but we have kept them in due to the amount of votes that blog had been given by voters! We hope that you like the selection, now you have hours of reading to do!! So we would like to congratulate you on being picked for 101 Beautilicious blogs of 2013!

Please feel free to place the badge on your website so you can show of your award!

When we were younger, Halloween was a blast! Wearing costumes, going to parties and eating sweets until we felt sick! But as you get older, the fun slowly fades away on Halloween. But why should it? We should be having more fun than the kids, which is why I’ve thrown together the biggest and best, deluxe Drop of Pink guide to the best ‘groan-up’ party your friends will ever attend!

Here’s a few main checkpoints you need to remember before we start:

- Invitations

- Decorations

- Costume

- Entertainment

- Food

- Drinks

- Spooky Surprises

INVITATIONS:

Before you even begin to plan your actual party, you’ll need to send out invitations weeks in advance, especially if you want people to have decent costumes! Just because you’re throwing a Halloween bash, doesn’t mean it has to be on the actual day, in fact you’re probably better off throwing it the weekend before or after Halloween, so then any friends who have kids or brothers and sisters then they can spend the actual day with them. Or if you absolutely have to throw it on the day of Halloween then make sure the party starts late enough so that your guests can spend the evening with their kids before attending your party. You want to catch people’s attention straight off, so instead of boring shop bought invitations, why not have a stab at making your own? You can design them on your computer using readymade Halloween graphics, either that or you can buy some card from your local stationary store (red orange and black are the best colors) and create your own spooky invitations. You can even cut out words from newspapers like ransom notes or murder investigation headlines including the person’s name in the headline! Make sure you include contact details and all of the relevant information, you don’t want people turning up to the wrong house or not attending because they didn’t know what time it started! And an RSVP section is crucial, especially if you are buying supplies, that way by a certain deadline, you will know how many people you are buying for and so won’t over compensate on punch ingredients!

DECORATIONS:

When it comes to Halloween decorations, the ideas are endless, but most of them include spider webs, fake blood and lots of jack-o-lanterns. Try to be a little more individual by using one of these unique ideas:

Make your punch bowl have a bit more bite by using food/drink safe dry ice in it to create a creepy mist, or if you can’t get food safe, place your punch bowl in a larger pot and put the dry ice in the larger pot. But make sure you pour hot water over the dry ice chunks otherwise the effect won’t work.

Make unique ice for drinks by freezing plastic bugs or putting food colouring in your ice moulds! And to be really unique, why not try filling a latex glove with water and freezing it, once it’s frozen, remove the glove carefully and place the ‘ice hand’ in the punch bowl!

Replace your regular white lights with coloured ones, red, green and even black work wonders at parties, all creating spooky surroundings.

Try and get a family member to be the ‘door man’. They could sit at a rocking chair dressed in a costume at the front door, but they must sit still so people think they are an ornament and then once they knock on the door, scare them by jumping up. It’ll definitely get your guests in the Halloween mood!

Use non toxic glow sticks to make food look radioactive, placing glow sticks under cubes of colored jelly works wonders! Also putting glow sticks in the punch works just as well.

No one likes a silent party, so make sure there is music. I’m not talking Rihanna or Elvis, I mean really creepy music, or even sound affects like creaking doors and whispering to keep your guests spooked throughout the night.

To keep up with the spooky décor, try buying some nice fresh flowers a few weeks before your party, you can enjoy them but purposely ‘forget’ to water them, they will droop and become dry and brown, perfect for the Halloween theme!

COSTUME:

They’ll be an article for costume ideas separate to this one so I will mention it briefly. On Halloween, you often get people coming in ‘predictable costumes’ like Vampires, dead brides, dead students, Witches etc. They’re alright, but the more unique the better. Try thinking outside of the box, for example: Scarecrow, Axe man, Morgue worker, Gravestone, Dark Fairy, The Grim Reaper, and characters from horror films can never go wrong.

ENTERTAINMENT:

Okay so, whether it’s a party where everyone knows everyone and you’ll all bezzie friends, or it’s a get together of new friends and people who don’t know each other. There is entertainment for everyone. First of all, it wouldn’t be a Halloween party without a costume competition. This way people will make the effort to have a spookliscious costume!

A great game is the ‘Do as it says’ game. You’ll need two plastic buckets; children’s pumpkin ones are perfect. You will also need about forty or eighty slips of paper (depending on how many guests you will have) and some Play-Doh. On half of the slips of paper, write down well known Halloween characters or stories, e.g. Frankenstein, The Adams Family, Hannibal Lector etc. On the other slips of paper, write ‘Mould with Clay’ or ‘Draw while blindfolded’ and so on. Everyone should come up one by one and pick a piece of paper out of each bucket and the other guests must guess what they are acting out. If it is a ‘act out the storyline’ then they can make noises but not speak. The outcome is often hilarious and you will be surprised at your friends acting/moulding skills!

If some of your guests are strangers to others, then a good ice breaking game is ‘Find your mate’. Put out two baskets, in the one of them, have small slips of paper with words like ‘Vampire’, ‘Witch’ and ‘Warewolf’ on them. Then in the other basket put slips of paper with corresponding words like ‘Blood’ ‘Broom’ and ‘Howl’. Put the guests into two groups, group A and group B. Group A pick out pieces of paper from the first basket, and Group B from the second. The guests must then find their mate!

If you take a trip to a wholesale store like Costco or Macro, and pick up some toilet rolls then playing Build a Mummy shouldn’t be too much trouble! It is what it’s called, split your guests into teams and give them several rolls of toilet roll each, whoever rolls their mummy the fastest wins… with 2nd prize going to the best mummy!

FOOD:

(I will write a separate article on Food and Drink but here’s some ideas for the time being)

The obvious ideas would be caramel apples and candy but a Halloween party is nothing without spooky themed food. Some of the best ideas I’ve come across are:

A plate full of ‘Bat Wings’, Just chicken wings marinated in BBQ or hot sauce with either blue, green or red food colouring incorporated in there.

A plate full of ‘Witches fingers’, these could be anything from hot dog sausages or chocolate fingers with red decorator gel to decorate, let your imagination go wild!

Caramel apples are an all time favourite, but if you’re throwing the ultimate Halloween spookfest then you probably won’t have time to make them properly, but cut apples into chunks, toss them in lemon juice (this stops them turning brown) and then let guests put chunks onto cocktail sticks and dip them in caramel.

Make truly devilish deviled eggs by adding red food colouring to the filling.

Another good idea is taking the classic cheese and pineapple sticks (these are just an example, you can pretty much put anything onto a cocktail stick) and sticking them into a full pumpkin, do this until the entire surface of the pumpkin is covered with cocktail appetizers. Voila, party pumpkins.

DRINKS:

As it is an adults party, there will most likely be alcoholic beverages being served. However, if you are supplying all of the guests with alcohol yourself, I’d suggest purchasing them from a wholesale store as it is often much cheaper. If you aren’t purchasing it all yourself, make sure you specify on the invitations for them to supply their own alcohol and something to share?

Garnishing Bloody Mary’s with an Olive eyeball is a good Halloween themed idea for drinks.

Jelly shots are perfect for parties, and the darker jelly flavours such as blackcurrant or black cherry are good to keep up with the Halloween theme.

But obviously, there has to be a Halloween punch, I’ll go into more detail about this in my next article, but sangria or spiced wine based punches are the best and the spiced element keeps in with Halloween.

SPOOKY SURPRISES:

Placing the odd surprise around your house is not going to hurt anyone. I suggest the very simple yet effective bucket of ‘insert Halloween themed item here’ above a door so it will fall as the person opens it. Gummy worms and Halloween confetti could be good although confetti is hard to clear up.

Make a Mystery box. Get a regular box, large or small you choose. Cut a fist sized hole in the front, and then on the inside, tape fringed bin liner to it, you can then put anything and everything scary to touch inside the box and offer guests a prize if they can guess what it is! Custard, rubber spiders and severed hands are all great ideas.

So, I will update with more Halloween articles soon, keep those beautiful eyes on Drop Of Pink!

I started my blog way back in 2008 when blogging was a very different game and not at all like it is now, but more on that later. Anyway, it all began by chance really, I was in my final year studying Journalism at Uni and had to create my own blog for a web writing module I was taking.

Before then I’d never heard of blogs nor did I know what one was, so I did a little research and came across a few make-up sites and channels on YT. I’d always been obsessed with cosmetics for as long as I could remember and was constantly buying/trying different products.

Writing about my shopping habits and beauty experiences just made sense really, it also justified (kind of) the fact that I would buy two foundations at one time to compare or owned 20 identical lipsticks!

I quickly became addicted to blogging and still am four years later. When you have a passion there is nothing better than sharing it with other people, people who understand and are just as potty about it as you are. I think everyone should have an outlet, a space on the net to be themselves and share thoughts about what they love, that’s one of the great things about blogging; anyone and everyone can do it so if you are contemplating starting one, do it!

Creating mine was one of the best things I’ve ever done. Having my blog has helped me in so many ways on both a personal and professional level; in fact I don’t know what I’d have done without it. Being a mid-twenties mum to a five year old, can at times be extremely stressful, so having an outside hobby away from that to chat about something a little superficial like cosmetics is a much needed escape.

It’s also opened many doors for me career wise, being a qualified journalist and a blogger combined has enabled me to be involved in some amazing projects with brands I never thought I’d ever be lucky enough to work with. Sometimes I still can’t quite believe the opportunities that writing a blog can bring!

Before I started reading beauty blogs a little over 5 years ago I had no idea what a blog was. I recall reading something about beauty blogs in Allure magazine and had to check it out and I was instantly hooked! But, I immediately noticed that all of the blog writers were in their 20’s and maybe a few in their 30’s. I kept on thinking there had to be others like me, in their mid 40’s that loved beauty and skincare too, but I searched constantly and couldn’t find any blogs that related to those of us in our 40’s.

It took me almost a year, but I finally got the nerve to write about my passion and Fab Over Forty was “born”. I have enjoyed writing my blog for over 4 years and have been blessed with so many opportunities that I never would have imagined when I started this. One of the things that I’ve enjoyed tremendously are the opportunities to interview some of the best in the business and people I have admired for years like Trish McEvoy, Dr. Doris Day, Tim Quinn and so many more and share their expertise and knowledge with my readers. Being asked by Redbook magazine and Ladies’ Home Journal to be one of their “beauty experts” because they feel that I really research and focus on what is of interest to my over 40 aged readers has truly been an honor.

One of the main focuses on my blog has been that there are options out there besides altering your face with surgery or injectables. I offer makeup tips and tricks that can be used for enhancing our looks and skincare options that are good for the skin without taking face-altering chances. Being over 40 is something to celebrate and enjoy!

Oprah has told all of us for years that we need to follow our dreams, no matter what our age. I never would have expected that as I turn 50 this year that I’d be doing this. Having my blog really has been an unexpected dream come true. It’s something that I constantly think about and try and improve upon and imagine what I can do next. When I’m at work I always am thinking about my site and how it really fulfills my creative side and I enjoying sharing what I learn. Oprah really was right – but we all knew that, didn’t we?!

You can check out Kari blog Fab Over Forty and also make sure you follow her on twitter HERE

I normally don’t write about TV show’s due to their not being anything good on TV, but once i saw this i just wanted to know what people’s thoughts on this advert was and are you excited? The TV program is on March 24 2012, the same month when a rival tv show called the The Voice is going to be launched so it will be exciting to see which one gets the attention of the public!

Before I started my site a few years ago, I hadn’t really been taking very good care of myself. I wasn’t up on the latest makeup or skincare and I sure didn’t treat myself to anything fun.I decided I was going to take $50USD out of each of my checks and start taking better care of myself. And since I didn’t know where to even begin in choosing things, I turned to the beauty blogs for ideas. Problem was, so many of them were geared towards the 20-somethings and didn’t really address what I felt like would work for me. I knew then that if I was looking for this, there had to be other older lovelies looking for this, too – and Older Girl Beauty was born.

It’s core premise has been to try products out and give my experience with them – good or bad. I’m not afraid to say if a product doesn’t work for me, in hopes of preventing someone like me from wasting their time and money. I do this primarily because when I first started out, I would look up products that I would find and then I wouldn’t see anything posted about it. That led me to think “Ohhh, I’ve discovered something”, and then it would be bad. This made me realize that folks just weren’t writing about how bad it was, not that they hadn’t tried them. Lesson learned.

Over the years I have been lucky enough to foster some really great relationships (*esp via twitter ) that has allowed me to expand the scope of my site. Now, not only do I get to write about things that I have tried, I get to discuss upcoming launches, interview beauty industry movers and shakers and do things I never thought I would ever be able to do, like report live from backstage at New York Fashion Week.

After all this time, I have found my holy grail products, products I wonder how I ever lived without before, the chance to try new and upcoming things and an appreciation for all things beauty. I especially love when I have friends and family that travel around the world that make a point to bring me things back to try. I love seeing what other lovelies use in their own cultures. I also love that I can help other people would are just as confused today as I was a few years ago find out what can work for them, too.

That is my favorite thing about having my site – it allows me to share my point of view, and help my readers experience things just as I do, whether it is via my twitter timeline, my up-to-the minute posts or my videos. No matter how you view me, it’s always me, my voice and its the same across the board. What you see it what you get.

When I started my blog over two years ago, I was pursuing my MSc in London, and was all brain-bored from studying for exams. On a whim, I started a blog, remembering that some of my friends from the USA had requested for swatches and photos of makeup brands they could only get in the UK. I was fortunate that other than me and my friends, other people wanted to read my blog too!

My beauty blog that has since developed from my boredom, Of Faces and Fingers, is known for its frank, honest reviews, and its no-nonsense skincare knowledge. I don’t believe in writing a rave, glowing review for a product just because it’s provided free as a sample. I have turned down product reviews where I was asked to let their PR approve my review before it went up on my site, or give ownership of my review (words, photos, and all) to the PR people or company. I also don’t believe in copying-and-pasting a press release on my blog, especially if it has unrealistic, hyperbolic language (e.g. “Scientifically formulated with ginko extract to grow your lashes by 5 times in just 7 days!”). On a couple of occasions, I was asked by PR agencies to modify a review to include their marketing language as though it was my own opinion, but if I can’t believe it, then I don’t write it down. Fortunately, I feel that readers do appreciate the honesty, and I’m always encouraged by feedback thanking me for the frankness. To me, the reputation as an honest blogger precedes the presence of PR samples.

At its best, beauty blogging should be a celebration of the beauty in every woman. In the limited context of my beauty blog, this means an unfiltered, non-manufactured opinion, from your average girl, not a celebrity pretending to be “just like us” while trying to sell us stuff. After all, you can see famous people hawking their stuff any day, and “reality” TV shows are on every TV channel. I mean, even Justin Bieber, who probably doesn’t know a thing about nail polish, has a nail polish collection to his name! In this age of ever-increasing commercialization, I believe more than ever in the heart of blogging – honest opinions, from the girl next door, who does not have a hidden agenda to sell a line of products. I feel that my blog readers do derive value from my unglamorous, straight-talking posts, flaws and all, so I try my best to have my blog encapsulate this ideal as well.

I’ve been blogging for over 2 years and have enjoyed every aspect of it. Writing offers an form of freedom and self-expression, photography offers an way to gain a new perspective on things, and I’ve even improved my HTML skills through having to fiddle around with the code on my blog. And of course, I’ve also enjoyed being a part of the beauty blogging community, that never fails to introduce me to the latest trends, and provides an inspiration for more ideas. It can be tough work sometimes – the need to balance the blog with a full-time job and social commitments, the need to keep staying fresh in terms of ideas, and the need to develop a thick skin as your work gets criticized on the internet. It may not be for everyone, but it’s definitely a passion for me.

Two and half years ago I set up Computergirl’s Musings, a skincare and beauty blog. I have battled with poor skin throughout my teenaged years and early twenties. While I was not as bad as many people, I suffered from patchy cystic acne, whiteheads, blackheads, large pores, dull grey skin, scars (from acne and picking spots), pigmentation… basically a horde of horrible skin complaints. This affected my confidence and use of makeup. We all crave to be that flawless pore-less beauty on a magazine cover, but for me I just wanted to lay off concealer/foundation and look alive for starters! After a particularly bad episode on my chin, I decided to set up an online skincare diary: Computergirl’s Musings.

I cover all things beauty related from makeup, Vintage (love vintage!), nail care, hair care, diet, books and much more. However the original idea was to document what products I was using and the outcome after using them for 30 days. I didn’t think anyone would read my blog, but the thought that they ‘might’ meant that I had some accountability and pressure to keep up a routine. Why 30 days? A normal female hormonal cycle is 30 days, during which your skin will undergo changes which will affect the performance of a product. Also at my age it takes my skin approximately 30 days to renew itself so after this period all the skin cells will have been exposed to that product allowing you to see and feel the full result.

I was offered antibiotics and tablets to clear up my skin but I refused them as I didn’t want to treat the symptoms, I wanted to fix the cause. For me medicine was a last result after learning all about various products, correct routines, skincare ingredients, diet and as much of everything else as I can get my hands on. I would rather do that than read a manufacturer’s claim and believe them. I’m just your average consumer, who now has a more educated understanding, which I share via my blog. I am not affiliated with any company so have an unbiased view!

Now my skin is MUCH better. The quest is not over as I am continually discovering new things. I feel much happier loving my skin and providing a great canvas for whatever I’m going to paint on top (and believe me, I have an unhealthy makeup obsession which sneaks up on the blog a lot!!). My blog has a skincare resource page linking to most of the skincare tips or product posts I have written- so if you are interested then please take a look.

I am not an expert, however I have found out a lot of things that I wish I had known in my teens to be able to prevent my skin and confidence getting into such a mess and try and fix it. If you have any questions then please feel free to ask- if I don’t know the answer then I’ll know someone who does!

My top skincare tip? Always make sure your cleanse your face properly in the morning and evening. (And no, properly does not mean those moist face wipes)!

As well as blogging I am on twitter (@computergirl200) and facebook, so stop by and say hi sometime! I also have a fashion dairy blog www.5foot10.blogspot.com which is the diary of a tall girl living in a world made for shorter people!

Lifeline Hangover Product Review!

So we got this product sent to us from www.getalifeline.com/ via twitter. So with these guys being generous we thought that it would be great if we reviewed their product and put it to the test! So here we GO!!

I have taken hangover pills before and some of them really did not work. The lifeline really did work for me, I don’t know if it was because I drank to little or it is an amazing product. I drank the same amount of alcohol what would of given me an hangover and after i woke up in the morning NO HANGOVER! It really was amazing, I was expecting them not to work and then, they worked!

There was only one thing what did confuse us on the packaging. On the box it says “For maximum benefit take two capsules within an hour of your first drink” one of my friends did not know if this was before your alcoholic drink or after in the morning. So we all guessed it was before you had your alcoholic drink and we guessed right! YAY! If this was more clear on the packaging I think it would be the perfect hangover product!

I would say this is a must have if you have work in the morning!

Below are a few pictures of the Lifeline Hangover.

Beauty Blog of The Week:- I Heart Heels

I’m a shoe-loving fanatic, what can I say? And that’s how this little journey of mine called, I Heart Heels, began. In 2008, I was just a girl with a love (ok, undying love) for peep-toes and all things pretty (aka lip gloss, skinny jeans, the works). So, I started my blog as an outlet for me to write about my favorite things and everything I love in both fashion and beauty. It started slowly, and it’s now turned into my full-time job. Eek!

But, a job I hardly call it. Obviously, writing about fashion and beauty is my true passion – and I wouldn’t have it any other way. But what really gets me are some of the celebrity, designer and stylist question-and-answer sessions I host. I get such a thrill out of hearing people open up about what they’re passionate about – whether it’s skincare or stilettos. And most of all, realizing each time that these are real people, too – with great style and an amazing beauty routine!

The year after my blog began, I had “little C.” (he’s now 2!) and my life forever changed – for the better. Swoon. I also introduced a weekly column titled Whiny Wednesdays, and now in addition to great product reviews, I host celebrity mom question-and-answer sessions here as well. It really and truly is a lot of fun!

I Heart Heels is a gathering place where you never know what you’re going to read – a fashion show…a celebrity interview…a shampoo that changed my life…a pair of jeans that looks great on all figures. There’s something for everyone, but, definitely those fellow shoe-loving fanatics. Wink.
